I’ve been following Andrew’s work for a long time, and l loved these assemblage / sculptural paintings he’s showing in the project space at Derek Eller. This is the last week of the show, so go brave the cold.

Andrew also runs a gallery in the front window of his studio in Greenpoint, called Arts Tropical.

I’m going to start posting some images by me, or the artists/galleries of work I liked in Miami. First up: some of my photos of Bank‘s booth at Pulse Miami, which consisted entirely of Bari Ziperstein‘s work. It was more like a gallery show than a typical “hey we’ve got stuff for sale” presentation so popular at such events. Here is a paragraph from her statement that relates to this work:

My current work continues this investigation of America’s consumer society and its material surplus and waste. Over the past year, I have created a series of small collages that deconstruct idealized domestic scenes that were culled from home décor magazines from the 1950s through the present, including the popular commercial publications Better Homes & Gardens and Architectural Digest. I transform posh interiors into absurd but highly structured environments by laying in paper cut-outs of stark white architectural beams that protrude, contort and escape out of everyday functional objects, such as chairs, tables, chandeliers and dishware. These works on paper function as studies for sculptural interventions on a grand scale.

  • Friday recommendation

MTAA’s latest “Over The Opening” event is tomorrow (Friday the 14th), so go check it out. This is the first one I’m going to miss, as we have tickets to a Charles Mee play.

    holidayrejects.jpg

On December 14, from 7pm to 10 pm, OTO is pleased to present Mike Koller’s “THE HOLIDAY REJECTS”

With the proliferation of video and photography equipment and even more so the availability and user-friendly nature of at-home post-production equipment and software, the do-it-yourself documentarian is a driving force behind all our familial interactions. The need to record, in detail, the various persons and their reactions to all the activities has increasingly become the chief activity itself. The time spent face to face becomes second to the execution of a thorough archive of the event. A smiling photo is more important than the argument it took to create it, the video containing each persons thoughts for the New Year takes precedent over the people themselves. In these ways the family becomes the discarded artifact of creating a visual history of events that are largely fictionalized or staged versions of an unknown third partyÂ’s expectations.

The Holiday Season, more than any other, creates a steady stream of videos and photos posted for all to see. Presented in a one night “X-mas Party” format are the photos and videos from 69 different family celebrations in a tribute to the discarded persons who were pivotal to their creation, The Holiday Rejects. True to the season, the party will feature food, drink and music to set the mood. Also featured will be three new animated video projections of a Christmas tree, a window overlooking a wintry landscape and the inescapable Yule Log. Come, imbibe, document, post.

Mike Koller is an artist and musician living and working in Brooklyn.

We were able to take photos as press, but their website says that visitor photography will not be allowed in the galleries. I hope that changes.

  • Joan Linder in “Newsday”

    joan-linder-grill-detail.jpg

Joan Linder, grill, detail, from The Pink

Today’s Newsday has an article on the artist Joan Linder by Ariella Budick and it’s one of the best things I’ve read about her work. There is a short video too. Here is an excerpt:

Turning the tables on generations of male artists who offered up the anatomies of women as fruits for delectation, Linder painted a series of “Men” who don’t seem aware that they’re hardly wearing any clothes. Corporate executives literally throw their weight around at the office, opening a file drawer or searching for a contact lens while bulbous bellies overhang their briefs and wobble over their stick-like legs.

“Nobody wants to look at this work,” Linder admits. “People don’t want to see naked men.”

The drawings were a response to Linder’s contemporaries Lisa Yuskavage and John Currin, who merge the classic nude with the Playboy kind. “I thought, ‘Screw that. I’m going to do these pictures of fat men and what power really looks like.’”

We first met Joan in 2001 after buying a photo from her “Man About Town” series at the inaugural show of Plus Ultra Gallery, titled “Skank.” We also have a small drawing of an electrical outlet from more recent times.

The image above is a detail from her recent show at Mixed Greens, via her website.
