  • First fuzzy cell phone photo

James and I just switched to AT&T, and got new phones.

I’m not used to holding it still yet. He was checking out his new phone when I took the picture.

  • When consultants actually say what they think

A friend working at an unnamed company told me about the (widely unloved) CEO bringing in yet another IT consultant, probably on a search and destroy mission to get more control over their tech people. He hired them to come in while the CIO was away on vacation. Nice.

Here is what they had to say:

The web site is fine, technically and architecturally. Your IT guys are quite competent — save you a great deal of money — and are ‘probably more competent than you deserve.’

The good guys (and gals) should win more often.

  • 3 Years of free hosting?

I don’t really need another web hosting account, but I will probably sign up in case I need them for some storage space, etc.

Rather than spend it on adverstising, 1 & 1 Internet has decided to give away 3 free years of hosting before they start their new (paid) hosting business in January. It includes CGI and MySQL, so it’s perfect for hosting a weblog. If I know and love you, I will help you set it up.

Update: new domains are $6 if you need one.

  • Panther Upgrade

Remember my bitching about having to pay the full price for the Panther upgrade? My serial number has mysteriously started working on the up-to-date form, so I’m now getting it for $20. Interesting.

I hope my PowerBook comes back from the shop by then.

My new PowerBook is already in the shop, so I’m back on a Windows desktop. The Airport Extreme card wasn’t working properly.

It’s no fun to have a wireless network in your apartment if you can’t leave the room where the base station is located.

My new PowerBook arrived Monday, so I get to pay full price for the new Panther version of OS X.

I am tempted to split the $199 “Family Pack” (5 licenses) with one of my fellow recent PowerBook purchasers…

My new PowerBook arrived. As Mark Morford tells us, even the packaging is good.

  • Meredith Allen

Maple Ave (Digimon) / Meredith Allen

I haven’t had much time to post lately, because I’ve been working on my new biz for hosting artist web sites. The working name for the project is “ArtCat”, but there’s nothing corporate to show you yet.

I have the beta version of the first artist site up — Meredith Allen. I wasn’t completely ready to launch, but something big was about to happen! Meredith’s photo on the homepage appeared this week in the September 1st issue of the New Yorker, as the illustration for a Dave Eggers story titled Measuring the Jump.

News Flash! It’s now on the New Yorker home page.

If any of you can link to her site or mention it in your weblogs, I would really apppreciate it. I’m trying to get it to show up in Google so that people seeing her image in the New Yorker will end up at Meredith’s site.

The site will have more content, images, plus some design changes over the next days and weeks. Her site is the test case for my new system, and I’m still working out some things.

  • If you don’t have Tivo yet…

and you have Time Warner Cable, I wouldn’t get it. For an extra $10/month, they’ve introduced a Digital Video Recorder. We just got ours, and it’s pretty cool. I’m using it to tape Deutsche Welle each morning for German practice.
